Our story

Why a watchmaker sells coffee

I did not discover coffee. I came back to it.

My mother is Colombian, and my earliest memories are of Santander and Norte de Santander, the same mountains where Domingo would one day plant his first Geisha. I spent childhood summers there, and for a time I lived in that border country between Colombia and Venezuela. It was not a gentle place in those years, and it asked a great deal of the people who called it home. I learned young what land and labour take from you before they give anything back. I worked sugarcane, banana, cassava, and, for a while, coffee.

There is a coincidence in this story I still struggle to believe. The farm Domingo bought, the rocky hillside he turned into a record-setting national champion, was a farm I knew as a boy. It belonged to my uncle by marriage, and I visited it often. It was even the first place I ever put money into a venture of my own: cattle, on that steep and stony ground. My herd never made it. Domingo, too, first tried cattle there, and cattle failed him as well. The land, it turned out, was always meant for coffee.

Life then carried me far from those mountains. I trained as a watchmaker and came to Europe to do it properly. I wanted to learn from the greatest names in the world, and I got my chance. I trained inside two of the world's great luxury groups, and in time became head watchmaker at one of their boutiques.

What those years taught me had less to do with watches than I expected. I saw how true luxury is built: the obsession with details no customer will ever notice, the patience, the honest story, the weight of the packaging, the note that follows long after a piece has left your hands. I found it moving. I still do.

My mother still lives in those mountains, and she never comes to visit without a piece of home in her bag. One trip, it was coffee, a gift from a producer near where she lives. Before I had even opened it, the aroma reached me. It did not smell like breakfast. It smelled like something rare. It smelled like happiness, like a good day about to begin. I knew at once that it belonged in the same conversation as the watches and the jewels, beside the finest things people save a lifetime for. And it struck me as almost absurd that coffee, the one luxury we allow ourselves every single day, is so seldom treated as one.

Because I have stood on both sides, the plantation and the boutique, I wanted to build this one way only: directly. This is a partnership, and an exclusive one. The producers do what no one does better, and we carry it to you exactly as they made it. Coming from the world I come from, I know what to call a craft this exacting. To plan a harvest against the weather and the odds, to leave nothing to chance, to make coffee this fine for years before the world noticed, and then, the moment he chose to enter, to win five years running.

That is grand mastery.

So this is us, bringing it straight to you. You never had to settle for what sits on a supermarket shelf. There was always something finer, and now you have access to it. Now it carries your name. Now it can be in your cup. You do not have to be kept apart from it any longer.

With respect for the hands that grew it,
Don Miguel
